2 printed text leaves (plate list), 30 lithographed plates including a lithographed pictorial title, original half Morocco gilt, slightly rubbed, new end papers, spine professionally rebacked, scattered foxing, small damp stain on top corner of few leaves not affecting plates, otherwise copy in good condition, First and only edition, Dickinson and Son, London, 1846. RARE. The scenery of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine provided the subject for her Sketches in the East, originally done in water-colour and later drawn on stone by Dickinson & Son when published in 1846. Lady Tenison is more commonly known for her work Castile and Andalusia (1853); her stunningly detailed Sketches in the East rarely appears on the market. Lady Louisa Mary Anne Tenison was the daughter of Thomas William Anson (1795-1854), 2nd Viscount and 1st Earl of Lichfield and Louisa Catherine, aughter of Nathaniel Philips Esq. of Slebech Hall, Co. Pembroke. In 1838 she married Edward King Tenison of Kilronan Castle, Co. Roscommon, who became Lord Lieutenant in 1856. In 1843 she and her husband visited Egypt, Syria and Palestine. She visited Damascus during Sir Richard Wood's consulship, and amongst the sketches of that city is one drawn in the consul's house. The other plates depict views of Tripoli, Beirut, Petra, as well as views in Egypt and the Holy Land. Bibliographic references: Not in Blackmer, tabey 1186.
