Description:

signed and dated in Arabic 'Shakir Hassan Al Said 1957' (lower left)

  • Provenance: Bissan Gallery, Doha. Acquired from the above by the present owner, circa 2003.
  • Dimensions: 29 x 34 cm (paper size)
  • Medium: colored pencil and oil crayon on paper (recto); ink on paper (verso)
  • Notes: Shakir Hassan Al Said's early paintings show an affinity to European avantgarde art movements, such as Expressionism and Cubism, and especially to the work of Paul Klee, but his works also draw on Arabic-Islamic heritage and popular culture. Mixing figurative and abstract elements, they are divided by grid-like patterns into different fields of bright color as in the present work. He is recognized today as one of the fathers of Modern Art in Iraq. His influence as an artist, a teacher, and a forerunner of art historical and theoretical writing in the Arab world has been tremendous.
