Description:

Woven in the renowned Kashan weaving ateliers at the close of the 19th century, this exceptional carpet bears the early Mohtasham Kashan signature, with workshop attribution to Mohammad Hassan ibn Reza Kashani, a master associated with the legacy of Ustad Mohtasham. It was commissioned by Aqa Mirza Baqer Tajer-e Kashani, a notable Qajar-era merchant bearing the honorific title 'Emad al-Tojjar' (Pillar of Merchants) - a rare surviving example of a documented, patron-signed Persian carpet. Executed in finely spun wool on a cotton foundation, the composition unfolds around a monumental flowering vase flanked by birds, framed by a scrolling garden in soft camel, copper, and turquoise tones. The border is exquisitely woven in nasta'liq calligraphy, featuring the full text of Ghazal No. 226 by Sa'di Shirazi, evoking themes of spring, spiritual joy, and ecstatic union. Both the patron inscription and the workshop signature are woven within the field. Rich in artistic, literary, and archival value, this carpet transcends decorative use, standing as a rare and culturally significant testament to the poetic and mercantile life of Qajar-era Kashan. The rosebud trees have bloomed, and the nightingales are drunk -The world is young again, and friends have gathered in joy. The lawn was trampled beneath the feet of ecstasy, As mystics and commoners rose in dance alike. Our companion has always stolen hearts at the gathering- Even more so, adorned with a flourish today. In the heart of our home stands a rose in full glory, Before whose stature, garden cypresses bow in shame. To the cypress, someone asked: "Why do you bear no fruit?" It answered: "The free-spirited carry empty hands." Many have followed the path of reason, O Sa'di- But none have reached the dwelling place of the mad.
